Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!
I don't think anything I could say today would do him justice. Peace, progress, change... the end of poverty, and discrimination-- these are all things he worked towards, and things for which we must continue to strive. We have made so much progress, but we still have so far to go...
So instead of trying to come up with something blindingly brilliant and enlightening (which, in my current mental state, I doubt I could do...), I'll just leave you with this petition:
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said:
"Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." (emphasis mine)
On this day, dedicated to a man who gave his life for peaceful progress, we're asking our leaders in Washington to hear our call and end the violent rhetoric, hateful language and empty bombast that has seeped its way into our politics.
We must, as President Obama said, learn to speak to each other "in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds." The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. understood this call for peace.
If you want to join me and thousands of others, please send this e-card to your elected leaders to let them know we must change the rhetoric if we wish to honor the victims of the shooting in Tucson.
